Having an above average level of emotional intelligence has become a key hiring and promotional criteria in many of these organizations.īeing stuck in our comfort zone creates chaos, drama and disengagement. Examples that come to mind of individuals and organizations that have learned to blast through their resistance by taking massive action are Elon Musk (Space-X, Tesla and Solar City) and Richard Branson. We need to allow ourselves to relentlessly continue to fail more and faster on the way to achieving better results. Unfortunately, most of us flee from our anxiety. Once we have enough urgency to take the leap of faith required to leave the status quo and safety of our comfort zone the journey to better results can begin.Īuthentic leaders seek out their anxiety because they recognize it as the trigger to their growth. When we lack sufficient motivation or connectedness to our desired results the anxiety keeps us trapped within the safety of our comfort zone. It is the actions we commit to that push us through our anxiety barrier toward the results we want to achieve. The urgency and connection we have to our desire for better results is what creates the motivation to take action. When we are creating tension, on some level, we are creating change. Handled correctly, it is the essential key to better results and should be embraced rather than avoided. The tension our anxiety creates is not to be denied, it is to be sought out. Our anxiety is our biological trigger for growth and change.
Learning to master our anxiety is an unbelievable advantage in the marketplace. The development of employees and organizations with these capabilities represents both the greatest challenge and opportunity in the present global economy. Our ability to embrace these changes will be determined by our level of emotional intelligence and authentic leadership. We are living in a time of rapid, accelerating change.
Gritty leadership is essential to effect the changes needed to position for continued success. By resistance to change can hinder efforts to position for the future, leaving a company vulnerable to becoming irrelevant especially during this time of rapid change. The market leader’s dilemma is how do you rally a sense of urgency to change when you do not feel any PAIN? do you embark on a painful course of action while feeling comfortable and safe? When a company is experiencing success, it is hard to understand the need for change.
